I help individuals, couples, and families tackle difficult life situations and mental health challenges like depression and anxiety, OCD, bipolar, trauma, PTSD and complex PTSD, dissociative disorders, psychosis, and more. I work with young adults (18+) all the way through to the elderly.
What to expect when you work with me:
Trevor Armitage (Psychotherapist, educator, author)
Life can sometimes throw you a curveball, impacting or overwhelming you in the most unexpected of ways.
I can provide counselling, resourcing and other supports that help address problems such as chronic pain; coping skills; domestic violence; grief and loss; relationship issues; self-esteem; self-harming; and suicidal ideation.
I utilise a range of psychotherapeutic approaches that may help alleviate or resolve your mental health problems. Modalities used will transition from talk therapy (top down), to somatic (bottom up), and back again. In addition to giving you the support you need, I aim to empower you with the necessary resources and skills, which facilitate the healing process. Issues I focus on include:
Depression and anxiety are some of the most common and challenging afflictions anyone can experience. These are not simple issues of feeling 'down' or 'nervous'. They are more persistent and magnified, significantly impacting and impeding your capacity to remain regulated and functional in the here and now. Through counselling and different therapeutic approaches a way forward may be found. Resolution and healing can be achieved in time; addressing both the symptoms, and more importantly, the underlying aetiology.
Very painful and traumatic life experiences (short or long lived) can leave an enduring and terrible mark upon a person. The anxiety, fear, shame and hopelessness (amongst other things) may stay with you, impacting your capacity to function. Together we can work on providing you with a true sense of safety, stabilisation and a sense of self. Once this is achieved you will be in a space where you can safely explore your experiences. In time you will find ways of processing and addressing the underlying issues, and hopefully achieve some sort of integration and healing that has a tangible effect upon you in the here and now.
We all experience the loss of a loved one in different ways. In most cases, with time, the loss is accepted and integrated into a new way of being. However, for some people the grief does not subside, affecting their capacity to function in every day life - becoming what is referred to as Prolonged Grief Disorder (DSM 5; ICD11). Those afflicted are emotionally and cognitively affected by the loss; displaying symptoms that may be confused with depression or PTSD. I use research-validated approaches to facilitate healing and to promote the integration of the loss into a life that is forever changed, while still honouring the memory of the departed.
It is important to note, severe mental health problems are often very much related to trauma. I have worked with people experiencing bipolar disorders, dissociative disorders and psychosis. Although I strive to support you with such issues, any therapy I provide needs to work alongside other treatments and/or medications, as prescribed by medical doctors. To see me for severe mental health issues, you need to provide a referral letter from your GP or psychiatrist.
